Symantec 2018 Internet Security Threat Report Reveals Several Concerning Issues

Symantec recently released their 2018 Internet Security Threat Report. They found, among other things, that there has been a significant spike in software supply chain attacks, an explosion in cryptocurrency coin-mining attacks; and a 10% rise in overall targeted attacks.

Additional findings:
– The number of new mobile malware variants increased by 54% in 2017;
– Grayware apps, which create privacy risks, increased by 20% in 2017, while 63% of grayware apps leak the device’s phone
number;
– 92% increase in new malware downloader variants
– 80% increase in new malware on Macs
– 8,500% increase in coinminer detections
– 46% increase in new ransomware variants
– 600% increase in Attacks on IoT devices
– 29% increase in industrial control system (ICS) related vulnerabilities
– China is the source of the most attacks
